The First Album - "Weapon Is My Lyric"

Rough In Hackney

X gets straight to the point with the first track by telling us where he's from and where he's at. Featuring Midrange, Kev, X posse and DJ Supreme T.

"I'm the bomb, and you're the soldier"

Kick Bag

No rap album is complete without a James Brown sample or two - 'X keeps it real years before Oakenfold and his Pig Bag decided to murder this riff.

"I'm the man, and you're the toyboy"

2 Bad

What a knockout - grooviest track on the album and our introduction to Lord V - hot mixing desk action backed up to the hilt with X and V on the lyrics and T on the scratches - these boys work a certain riff fully a decade before Howie B got there - and work in a bit of Eric B and Rakim at the same time ....

"Darth Vader of Rap - the Overlord's on track"

Go! It's Like World War 3

"Mankind needs a kick in the behind" - Cold War meets Street War - Overlord vents his frustration at the way things were in the 80s, and manages to avoid swearing. Samples courtesy of that bit of Beethoven used in "A Clockwork Orange"

Clap Your Hands

Lord V gets more ear time. As does James Brown. I've never been sure if X is advocating violence, or just getting the mats out and body popping, as the solution to the world's problems -

"Put all the mess in the palm of your hand - now clap your hands"

Weapon Is My Lyric

Overlord clears up any confusion you might have had about his motivation - he's here to rap the world out of the mess it's in.

"...trying to ban the man ... rappers with the clappers"

The Earth Is Moving

Whilst guns and drugs are out - other mainstays of the genre are in as X celebrates things like clothes, ladies, the crowd, other MCs, and his own talent on the mic......

"..I specialise in dance - you move, like ants in your pants"

Now My Day Begins

Wheel off James Brown and dig up Ennio Morricone as X tells us of a day in urban life - after taking care to leave his telly on so people will think there's someody in, X sets off from his crib for a day in the Wild West of the Big Smoke.

"I kept my cool pulled out my nunchukas - he didn't stand a chance that motherfucker"

Brutal Bass

You can't have too much Ennio Morricone. But you can have too much electric guitar, especially on a rap album if you want to retain your "street" credentials. Just don't do it again please, X !

"power breakdown !"

Visa To Rock

... and a Passport to Disco as X slows it down in order to check out the correct credentials of some other crews

"..... typical Overlord X production - girl stick to me, I've got suction"

14 Days In Hell

X brings us back down to earth with a powerful piece decrying the wrongful conviction and subsequent execution of Edward Earl Johnson - detailed in the documentary "14 Days In May".

"can't believe I'm here, right now in the electric chair"
